Essential Gardening Tips for February: Preparing for Spring

February is a transitional month in the garden. While winter is still holding on, the first signs of spring start to appear, making this the perfect time to get ahead with essential gardening tasks. Whether you're maintaining a small garden, a commercial outdoor space, or a family-friendly lawn, the work you do now will ensure a thriving garden in the months ahead.

1. Tidy Up and Get Ready for Growth

  • Clear away leaves, weeds, and debris from flower beds, patios, and pathways.

  • Cut back dead growth on perennials to encourage fresh shoots.

  • If the weather allows, lightly turn over the soil to improve aeration and drainage.

2. Prune for Healthier Plants

  • Roses – Now is the time to prune bush and climbing roses to encourage strong, healthy blooms in summer.

  • Fruit Trees & Shrubs – Apple and pear trees benefit from pruning before new growth starts. This also applies to blackcurrants, gooseberries, and autumn-fruiting raspberries.

3. Start Sowing Early Seeds

  • Hardy annuals like sweet peas and calendula can be sown indoors or in a greenhouse.

  • Vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and chillies should be started in seed trays for an early boost.

4. Check & Maintain Garden Structures

  • Inspect fences, trellises, and sheds for damage from winter weather. A quick repair or fresh coat of preservative can save time later.

  • If you have a greenhouse, clean the glass and remove any algae or pests before planting seedlings.

5. Lawn Care Preparation

  • Rake up moss and debris on mild days to prevent lawn damage.

  • If the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, start edging and patch repairs for a neater look come spring.

6. Encourage Wildlife Into Your Garden

  • Keep bird feeders topped up to support local wildlife during the colder weeks.

  • If you have a pond, remove any excess leaves, but be mindful of hibernating creatures.

Get Your Garden Spring-Ready

With spring just around the corner, now is the time to set your garden up for success. A little preparation in February ensures healthier plants, a neater space, and a head start on growing your flowers and vegetables.
